GOPIO Rally Statement of Guyana |
GOPIO Presented the following statement at a rally on Guyana held in New
York city on July 14th. The statement was read by GOPIO Secretary General
Ashook Ramsaran and is as follows:York city on July 14th. The statement was
read by GOPIO Secretary General Ashook Ramsaran and is as follows:
The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin is very grateful to
Guyanese International and the organizers of the rally for extending the
invitation to GOPIO to participate as a co-sponsor and give its support to this
public expression of deep concern for the atrocities that are being inflicted
on people in Guyana.
GOPIO's mission has always been, and continues to be, to constantly
monitor and identify the current critical issues affecting East Indians outside
India, and seek redress for these grievances through the respective governments,
human/civic/political rights agencies, and all other avenues that can provide
influence and pressure to make a positive difference. GOPIO has been in the
forefront of the cause of East Indians, championing democratic processes in
Fiji, Guyana and elsewhere as early as 1988. We recently held our 3rd Regional
European Conference in the Netherlands where the subject of Violations of the
Rights East Indians was explored in a full session. We have also planned a
major full-fledged conference in December 2002 in New York to bring more
awareness to this continuing tragedy. It is a growing concern and demands quick
corrective actions.
GOPIO pledges its full support to any and all peaceful and legal
efforts to seriously address these issues that affect the lives of so many
people. We encourage all those who are outraged by the continuing attacks and
killings to voice their anger, express their concern and support the organizers
of this rally to petition the Government of Guyana, the primary opposition
parties, all appropriate agencies, groups, associations and individuals to do
all that is required to quickly put an end to these atrocities.
We believe it is the primary responsibility of every government to
provide for the safety and well-being of its citizens, the Government of Guyana
being no exception. The Government of Guyana is obligated to do all that it is
empowered to do in order to fulfill the obligations mandated by the people of
Guyana since it was duly elected to govern. We condemn the killings and abuses,
and remind all parties that they are also obligated to observe the rule of law
and democratic processes for the benefit of all citizens of Guyana, not for a
select group. We have already informed the Government of Guyana, the primary
parties, other governments, rights agencies and the media of GOPIO's deep
concern about the deteriorating conditions in Guyana, and have requested
immediate action to put a permanent stop to these atrocities.
GOPIO promises to be continuously vigilant in monitoring the current
situation in Guyana and other countries with significant population of people
of Indian origin, alert others and provide more global awareness, conduct
regular forums on the rights issues, and solicit all necessary assistance for
quick, corrective actions. It is GOPIO's mission and we fully support all
groups and associations in this effort.
GOPIO requests PIOs join with GUYANESE INTERNATIONAL, GOPIO and the
many other organizations and individuals to express your support on behalf of
all their efforts to help the people of Guyana to live safe and secure lives.
Let your voices be heard for this good and worthy cause.

GOPIO CONDEMNS SOUTH AFRICAN KILLINGS OF PIOs |
Fear among Indians as another killed in Durban Indian Express, Monday,
July 29, 2002 (Press Trust Of India)
An elderly Indian woman was murdered here, bringing the number to five such
killings in the past two months which have triggered fear among the Indian
community here. Wife of a former Indian educationist, Susheela Devi Ramduth,
69, was strangled in her home in Claire Estate on Friday, police said today.
''Society talks about bringing about moral regeneration. The murders go
totally against these ideals, especially targeting elderly, defenceless
women,'' said Ela Gandhi, grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi and an Indian-origin
MP in the ruling ANC government.
''Although the community may be angry, calm must prevail. We cannot
fight violence with violence,'' she said. Earlier, Chintamoney Maharaj, 58, was
choked to death with a cell-phone cord at her home in the nearby suburb of
Parlock. Mariam Hansa, 60, was murdered in Claire Estate, while sisters Ayesha
Moosa, 68, and Julie, 59, were killed in Westville, a few kilometres from
Claire Estate. ''Crimes reported... Take too long to be investigated and
sometimes nothing happens,'' said Krish Gounden, a spokesperson for the
development forum in Claire Estate.
GOPIO condemns these killings in the strongest words and demand the
South Africa Government to take immediate action to stop the killings and
punish the perpetrators.
